Wrightwood California Engagement | Brittany and Steve

I finally got to shoot someone from the Deloye family! Steve and Brittany got engaged on a chilly afternoon in November 2009 at the rustic camp Coulter Pines near Wrightwood California, where the two met. They have either been campers or helpers there since they were 14 years old. The camp has seen better days, but it still brings back plenty of memories for Brittany and Steve as they grew up attending the YMCA camp. The huge trees and old buildings made for a great location for an engagement shoot this last weekend. Next we headed to Jackson Lake for some lakeside photos, but the pristine and calm evening was interrupted by a 4 to 5 year old enemy combatant, who clearly didn’t like us invading his lake shore territory. He threatened us with his verbally boisterous “BANG BANG BANG” and brandished a serious looking sword, which also doubled as a tree branch. Anyway, Brittany held off our foe, high heels and all, until Steve and I could get back to the safety of my truck and we hi tailed it out of there. Whew, that was a close one. Thanks Brit! After the heroic efforts of my new best friend Brittany, we still had 15 minutes to catch a beautiful sunset going down over the Angeles National Forest. The photo session ended like any true Hollywood silver screen love story, where the guy gets the girl, and they kissed into the sunset! Thank you Brittany and Steve for a wonderful evening.

P.S. Spent the day before and after the engagement shoot up in Big Bear with my family. It had been a long time since I got to fish with my daughter Emily. So we got up at the crack of 9:00 am to go fish Big Bear lake for a couple of hours each morning. I believe we did better than anyone else around us. Our total fish count (4), 2 sunfish and 2 big mouth bass. Great weekend!

Irvine and Santa Ana Engagement | Jennifer and Jeff

My last engagement started out with a rattlesnake. I left it alone and I took my couple into another direction, and the evening turned out great. Tonight’s engagement didn’t turn out so lucky. Ten minutes into this session, my new friends Jenn and Jeff headed directly up some stairs precisely where I told them to go and proceeded to startle a wasp or hornets nest. I don’t know exactly what they were, cause I wasn’t going to get close enough to find out. Jennifer escaped without a single sting. I am still astounded by that, she was only a foot or two below all the chaos that was happening around Jeff’s head. I’ll get back to him in a second. From where I stood, I saw Jennifer go into super slow motion. I was yelling at her to go back down the stairs, but she didn’t make any attempt to vacate the area. It just looked like she was trying to lay down on the stairs and take a nap. She claims she didn’t want to leave her mans side. I think NAP! While Jennifer was going into slumber mode, Jeff was swatting at and hitting a few of his attackers. He was stung on the forehead and lip, and after spitting out the first yellow bandits, he spun around and took two more hits to the back of his neck. Finally gaining his composer and clearing from the stairs, Jennifer and I checked out Jeff’s wounds and thought only the four stings were the extent of his injury. A few minutes went by, and Jennifer pulled the back of Jeff’s shirt up and found 5 more. Later that evening at home the couple came across another one for a grand total of ten stings. Jeff was a trooper and finished out the session for his bride to be. You can tell by the images that he definitely wasn’t letting any of the pain show through while have a good time hanging out with his best friend Jennifer. We ended the night on a high note with chocolate souffle at the Salt Creek Grille in Dana Point where Jennifer and Jeff will have their reception. Excellent choice you two!

Irvine, LA and Beverly Hills Engagment | Sonal and Akhil

Sonal and Akhil were introduced by their parents when they were in their teens, reluctantly. Understandably, most teenagers don’t want to be set up by their parents. Their paths crossed a few more times before they started to take an interest in each other. At the time Akhil was living in New York and planned to visit family in California over Christmas. They saw each other a number of times during that brief vacation and then for the next 6 months they both made trips to and from New York to spend time together. I guess you could say the rest is history. Hmm, maybe those parents of ours just might know what they are talking about after all.

I am a little hesitant in telling how the engagement shoot started on Saturday night. However, it did have a very interesting start to it. Sonal and Akhil asked me to take photos of them in a country like setting with fields and trees all around. One of my go to locations for that very thing is Quail Hill near Irvine California. Sonal and Akhil were running 15 minutes late and so that gave me time to check out one of the locations that I wanted to photograph them. I grabbed a small step ladder out of my truck and headed for the billowing grass plants that were going to make for a great background shot. As I found the perfect spot to place my couple and set up my ladder, I almost stepped on my little friend shown below. He was minding his own business and just sunning himself when I showed up and disturbed his quiet time. He harmlessly went into his hole, I left the area immediately. For the brief time I did have my couple near any grassy field or tree area I walked in front of them to make sure there weren’t any other native critters slithering around. One question that Sonal asked me when we first walked around the area that we were about to shoot in was, Scott, are there any animals around here? With a nervous smile on her face. I answered; there are tons of cute little bunnies.:)

P.S. Frogger update: After 3 to 4 months of froggy up bringing. Emily has raised 7 of them to adulthood. The largest of the bumpy skinned critters is a little larger than a golf ball. Photos to come…
